Kingdom Housing Association have built an innovative housing development in Fife, using similar housetypes to test different fabric and technology solutions to energy use during the construction and use of homes. Our office visited during June, when the development was unoccupied and open to professionals and the public. Reps were on hand to speak about and demonstrate their products. Some of the designers were also available to discuss the innovations in each house.
Some of the technologies are pretty out there. One house had a structure formed from two low-grade timber boards, sandwiching POLYSTYRENE, which acts as STRUCTURE.
One innovative type of insulation we’re using in a project that is still not onsite yet, is EnergyFlo insulation. This solid insulation has vertical channels sealed at the top and bottom of every storey. Air is pre-warmed before entering the house at a high level, and a whole house ventilation system works as one normally would, drawing the air from the kitchen and bathroom and out of the house. Of course, you can add a second level of heat recovery to this if you want.
This is a cross section of the insulation. Of course, you need quite a lot of blank wall for this to really be effective, but it’s a means of reducing the energy use of the house with no technology, just a fabric solution.
